Someone just saw my Shipyard IPA post on twitter and alerted me to another one of the Pugsley’s Signature Series ales, the Smashed Pumpkin. Considering how I feel about the Pumpkinhead, I’ve gotta try this sometime soon.

I might have to wait until fall unless someone sends me a bottle of that stuff (wink wink, nudge nudge), but I still have a bottle of the XXXX ready to go for The Beer Blogger Brunch! I need to arrange this before I decide to drink everything that I have in the

As I drink more beer, I start looking at the ingredients, and I recognize the names of the hops, the types of malt… I still can’t tell you that something is made with Cascade Hops or Crystal Malt, but I’m getting closer. I need to have a flavor/smell test with a bunch of spices a few times a week to get my senses better tuned to this job. What’s biscuity? I can kind of tell, but it helps when someone with a more experienced palate is there to assist me in this task.

Below are (mostly) my thoughts on what this beer tastes like ;-)

Just The Facts

Appearance: Hazy red amber
Smell: Red grapefruit and lingering hop dryness (obv) and my pick – strawberry cotton candy
Taste: Lavender, Rooibos
Mouthfeel: Medium Bodied, not quite the thickness of most Imperial IPAs
Drinkability: Good amount of bitterness in the flavor, not too much that I couldn’t split two of them
