Continuing our Morland beer tour, we’ve got Old Speckled Hen in a can! Nitrolicious. Is that a superlative?

Hey, if your name is Prush and you were trying to send me a package from Bloomingburg, NY, I’m sorry I didn’t receive it – UPS has weird policies and I prefer to receive things by Fedex. I love getting unsolicited gifts of beer in the mail! Please contact me on Twitter or by e-mail and we can get them to ship it back for free (I think). They didn’t handle the delivery correctly.

Did we talk about the widget yet? I don’t think I’ve done any nitro beers yet, so probably not. I read something fun about the widget and I included it in the video, but the name comes from the economic blanket term widget for some nondescript assembly-line item. Are there any other items out there that were named generically because they didn’t have a more descriptive name? If you’ve got a story, post it in the comments section – I’m interested to know this.

Check out this picture of the widget. It’s one piece and it just spins and releases the gas into the bottle. That one is designed for bottles because the other one is just a sphere. They couldn’t fit the spheres through the mouth of the bottle and that was the innovation they came up with.

There are Nitro Bottles of the Old Speckled Hen out there (well, Beer Advocate claims there are), but I’ve never seen one. I don’t think it would look as sexy in a clear glass bottle – you probably don’t want to show everyone there’s a widget in the bottle. The can hides it well.

Just The Facts

Appearance: Cascading pinkish orange to deep crimson
Smell: Not a big nose on this one – the nitro bubbles are small and they don’t pop
Taste: Light bitters, bready sweetness
Mouthfeel: Full Bodied from the nitro
Drinkability: Full-on session
