To say that I can be unbiased with all of these beers is tough. Some I like more than others and some I have a special connection with. I grew up about fifteen minutes from the Shipyard brewery (ten if my mom wasn’t in the car with me) and I’ll always have a place in my heart for Shipyard.

Can anyone really be unbiased? I don’t think so. I say something tastes more like grapefruit than orange and someone says it tastest more like orange than grapefruit. Who is right? There are some hops that give off distinctly Grapefruity characteristics (less orangey), so in some cases, there’s a concrete right and wrong answer. In some cases, the palate is up for debate. All I can promise to you is that I’m getting better at giving you the straight dope every day.

The straight dope about the Shipyard IPA is that it is a mildly hoppy IPA. This has been around a lot longer than the West Coast, crap-hopped-out-of-them IPAs we’re now all used to. As tastes change, some beers change and some stick to their roots, and Shipyard’s IPA has stayed true to its fans and now delivers a stepping-stone IPA for non-IPA drinkers.

Just The Facts

Appearance: Clear Orangey Amber
Smell: Faint Hops, slight citrus
Taste: Quite mild for the new breed of IPAs,
Mouthfeel: Light bodied
Drinkability: Easy drinking, could have a bunch of them without the I-can-take-any-more-bitter you might get from some other IPAs
